We’ve reached the end of 2001 AD. A year that made history. A year that may change the future direction of mankind. Is the Nostradomus prediction accurate? Well, it’s everybody’s guess.
When we reflect on the September 11 incident in the US and try to analyze it, we are reminded of a story the Native Americans used to tell their young ones:
An old man was talking to his grandson about how he felt. He said, ‘I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is the vengeful, angry, violent one. The other wolf is the loving, compassionate one.” The grandson asked him, “Which wolf will win the fight in your heart?” The grandfather answered: “The one I feed.”
Which wolf are you feeding?
Meantime, we lesser mortals need to keep on with what little things we need to do to repay for the privilege of occupying some space on this tiny spec of dust floating in the universe. This issue of HRD Gateway will help us in that direction.
The first feature article is for HRD professionals who nurse the thought of one day going on their own as full time independent training specialists. The second article shows us how to develop positive self-talk to ensure our success in our goals and dreams. The third article offers a case study in human talents development. Other departments of this issue of HRD Gateway help lead you yet one step forward in your life journey.
Wishing our readers a happy and successful year in 2002!
Cheers,

Article One:
"What
It Takes To Be A Full Time Independent Training Specialist"
By G K Lim
So, you want to be a training specialist. And earn a comfortable income in this profession.
Well, the time is ripe.
As Asia and the rest of the world thunder through the current Millennium, many changes take place. The business environment is fast paced -- sometimes too fast for some companies and executives. To catch up, to survive and succeed in such an environment, companies want their human capital (their employees) to acquire new skills and to be multi-skilled.
Furthermore, we are at the threshold of the k-economy age. In business development, and for companies to succeed, bricks-and-mortar is no more the vital factor. Today, human capital rules supreme. And it must be greatly improved, which means more skills and competencies.
How do companies develop their human capital? Yep, you got it -- through training. That’s where you -- the training specialist -- come in.
If you come into the training business to make a fast buck, I am sorry you have jumped on the wrong wagon.
The training profession is like the medical, teaching, and legal profession; it’s like being a religious leader, a nurse, and a veterinarian. To succeed as a training specialist, you need a certain amount of passion.
Those who are very successful doctors, teachers, veterinarian, religious leaders and nurses know what passion is. Without passion for their profession, they will not succeed. In fact, doctors, teachers, religious leaders and veterinarians who don’t have passion for their professions will end up stressful and bitter.
Passion is that not-easily-measured state of mind that keeps one going in a certain direction no matter how difficult that journey is.
There are a few passions
needed to succeed as a fulltime training specialist:
[1]
Passion for the profession – the driver.
[2]
Passion for your area of specialization – the product.
[3]
Passion for adult learning technologies – the vehicle.
[4]
Passion for self-promotion – the horn.
[5]
Passion for being a catalyst to change in others – the delivery
of your product.
[6]
Passion for accountability – the results of the use of your
product.
When you have all of the above, you have what it takes to be full time independent training specialist.
Next issue: Part Two: “Passion for the profession”

Feature Article Two:
"Are
You Taking One Step Forward And Two Steps Back?"
By Jan Tincher
Are you taking one step forward and two steps back in finances, relationships, or some other area of your life?
Is something stopping you from succeeding?
You know what? It may be just your thoughts. Why not try this exercise?
Draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper. On the left, list all the negative thoughts you have about your situation. On the right, list all the positive thoughts you have about it.
Look at all the negative thoughts on the left. When you hold a negative thought up to scrutiny, it usually fades, doesn't it? Why is that?
Because many times, we hold a negative thought in our minds out of habit. When we give it a second look, we realize “Hey, that's not what I really want.”
For instance, you say “I can't do [this] because of [that].” Like, “I can't get a raise because they want me to travel.” Maybe when you hold that thought up to scrutiny, you see that they only want you to travel X amount of days a month -- or only go X amount of kilometers away. X amount doesn't seem so bad now, does it?
Or, “I can't take that job because they want me to work week ends.” Then, you look into it further and see that it's only one week end, every two months, which just might be acceptable to you.
Put your “I can't because …….” up to scrutiny before you make a final decision. See if it's worth changing your lifestyle, or whatever, to do whatever it takes to go forward.
When you are aware that the negative thought is there, that is the first step toward changing. Whenever you have a “I can't because …….” Take another look. Maybe it's a “I'd rather not because …….” If that's the case, check your priorities. Scrutinize your thought. Maybe a thought pattern took control of your life when you weren't looking. Keep holding it up to the light until it goes away. Maybe that will help you take two steps forward and none backward.
Work with it until all your thoughts are good. Have a great life!

Feature Article Three:
A Case
Study in Human Talents Development
By Jayadeva de Silva
In one American university, the Director of Human Resource Development, created a new training course for supervisory staff members. She began the process with focus groups that included both prospective participants and supervisors to identify the key skills and ideas needed from the training. She consulted with outside experts to determine content. She observed training programs and met with other university HRD Directors to compare notes before developing the training. She formed a university-wide advisory committee to review and assist with the training design and delivery.
Then, working with internal and external vendors, she developed the objective-based training sessions. Managers of trainees are required to attend an initial meeting which introduces training session content and the role of the manager in supporting the training efforts. Gradually, more and more managers are attending the complete training as well.
She piloted sessions with the first couple of training groups. Sessions were redesigned based on feedback. Trainers present relevant examples and activities during the sessions. The participants fill out multi-page evaluations that provide feedback about content, learning, and the effectiveness of the sessions. These are due within a week and not required at the end of the session so participants have time for thoughtful review. Training redesign is an ongoing process based on feedback.
A couple of months after the sessions, the HRD Director meets with employees who participated to assess their satisfaction and learning over time. She also meets with their supervisors to assess whether the employees are applying the skills in the workplace. She is working to provide actual testing and 360 degree feedback to strengthen the training transfer component of the program.
Is the program a success? Yes! She spent the time to implement several important steps required to ensure training is effective and the university is reaping great results from the resources invested in the training. You can experience these results, too!
Can YOU identify the important steps this HR Director took to ensure effectiveness of training?
